Cloves are actually the buds of a tree in the family Myrtaceae (clove tree). Spices attracted European voyagers east and clove was one of the key spices. Though used for centuries, only recently has the world woken up to doing actual research on cloves.
Cloves make up an important part of ‘Garam Masala’ which in turn is an important ingredient in a lot of Indian cuisine.
In India over centuries clove has been used in our cooking and medicinal uses, especially for oral health. The rest of the western world is today curious about both and is waking up to the fragrance, flavour and medicinal uses of clove.
For diabetics, nigericin, a component of clove extract, reduces insulin resistance in mouse muscle cells. Clove also has anti inflammatory properties.
